He rubbed the membranous film of my wings between his fingers and my knees buckled.
“Remove your hand,” I said, breathless, “or you will regret it.”
For a moment, he let me think he’d do as I’d asked. He let me curse my mouth for ever having opened. Then he glanced up with silver eyes gone molten, and I wondered if he’d heard me at all.
His lips curved as he said, “I somehow doubt that.”
