The best thing to happen this week was flipping the calendar over to September and seeing “First Day of Fall” marked on the twenty-third. Come on, cool weather! These one hundred degree days with heat indexes twenty degrees above that are killing me.
On that somber note, I unearthed my grimoire. Oiled leather rubbed softly beneath my fingertips as I brushed aside dirt clods and revealed the well-insulated tome. When I touched its cover, awareness sparked. “Sleep.” After allowing brief skin-to-page contact, its flare of sentience snuffed out in a pulse of latent magic. Then I rewrapped it and tucked it under my arm.

Very specific sensory information, and the book’s a character itself. It’s the details that make it real, whether ordinary or uncanny.
